Capone (2020) Movie Review: Tom Hardy's new Film |
'Capone (2020)' is directed by Josh Trank and stars Tom Hardy as Al Capone. This film tells the story of his final year of life after his release from prison. He spends one more year with his family in Florida as his mind slowly deteriorates. He starts having visions, hallucinations. He can't control his bowels anymore. Basically, he's just one shell of a human being.
Josh Trank's First movie 'Chronicle' was a masterpiece |
We were very intrigued to see this movie because we really loved the first Josh Trank movie 'Chronicle' quite a bit.
Josh Trank's second movie 'Fantastic Four' was a pile of dogshit |
His second movie 'Fant4stic' however, had basically nothing to like about it whatsoever. We all have hoped to see him have a comeback. And Who doesn't love Tom Hardy?
When Tom Hardy is given the right role and he really sinks his teeth into it and it's paired with a director who really understands what he's going for and is doing his best to achieve that vision: Tom Hardy's excellent. Unfortunately, I don't really think these elements coalesced to make a good film with Capone.
Who doesn't love Tom Hardy? |
The Concept:
I think the concept of this movie is really intriguing. Let's take one of the most notorious gangsters and criminals in history Al Capone and show you him at his worst:- When he literally can't even remember who he is or any of the people around him
- When he chews carrots instead of cigars.
- When he vomits and shits all over himself.
- Or no, Maybe when he can't remember who his OWN wife.
Tom Hardy as Al Capone |
Yeah! Let's take That guy and show you him at his worst. Great concept! but unfortunately, the execution of that concept is Extremely Dull. I didn't find myself caring about much of anything that was going on and it was difficult to understand what Trank was trying to communicate with his movie because the times it does feel like a parody but other times it feels unintentionally hilarious.
Tom Hardy & Linda Cardellini Performance:
Tom Hardy's performance doesn't just swing for the fences, Oh no! It swings for the Next Fucking Continent. He is going so over the top that you can't even see him anymore. His voice is sort of like a combination of Nick Nolte and Dave.
Tom Hardy & Linda Cardellini giving amazing performances
|
Linda Cardellini plays out Capone's wife and a Lot rests on her shoulders because she's the heart and soul of the movie. I don't know nothing about the real person when it comes to that, I'm not even.... Okay. But really this whole situation and how it impacts her and how she being family has responsibilities to person like Capone. That's what hits you. That's really the reason you care. You give a shit because it's just a horrible situation. So Tom Hardy had to sell the mental decline of Al Capone. She had to sell us in caring because we care about her. And you buy into it.
Characters & Storyline:
Most of the characters in this movie are just dealing with the fact that Capone has lost his mind that he has hidden money somewhere and they are spying on Capone trying to find out where that money is see if he's still in any way involved in his criminal Empire and those characters seem to also have real stakes in their lives. Capone. Nothing really happens with that storyline either storylines are just sort of tossed out the window.
So while I respect what the movie is trying to do and I certainly respect Trank as a filmmaker. None of it really worked for me. I found this to be a very disappointing movie with a somewhat unintentionally hilarious performance from Tom Hardy.
As the movie begins to turn into a series of hallucinations and visions he begins to To imagine people that aren't there and there are scenes that establish characters that are later revealed to Be Imagined but the scenes that established the Imagine characters were separate from Al Capone took place somewhere else where Al Capone wasn't we were introduced to a character and his characters later revealed to be imaginary. So the film doesn't really have any rules for its scenes. It seems like anything could actually be in Capone's mind. Even scenes where he's not present and so it's really difficult to follow.
Tom Hardy portrays Al Capone in his Final time really captures the essence |

The Editing:
Editing was done by Josh Trank himself. Which is extremely bad and it feels almost intentionally bad.Josh Trank as the Director of 'Capone' |
Done just to make you feel disoriented or like you have Dementia or you're suffering from what Capone is suffering from. It's a common cinematic technique. But this poorly done quick cut editing, for a dramatic film, was quite off-putting. If that was his goal he succeeded but that doesn't mean that it necessarily would work for you. I think there are films that can make you feel strange, very odd or even a little upset. But those movies are kind of supposed to feel that way. Where sanity ends and insanity begins |
I just felt uncomfortable and it seemed to make me want to feel nauseous but not in a way that felt. It's horrible. It's depressing. It's horrific and I just don't felt uncomfortable by that life who's had dementia probably watching this is going to be more disturbing than funny because it's going to remind you of some really horrible Memories the other issue I have with the movie is that character motivation doesn't seem important at all for really
Final Verdict:
It's not perfect and definitely has issues. But, I really dug this different look into Al Capone's life. Like, usually about Capone, Tommy guns and murder and Mayhem and there are some bloody segments in this movie usually dealing with hallucinations he's having or memories. It feels like it should be more of a companion piece to your general knowledge of Al Capone. It assumes you know, who this guy is and that's a pretty fair assessment a fair assumption, if ever there was one. Most people know that Al Capone was a murderous mobster, but if by chance you don't know who he is and you don't really know what Al Capone did? Just go watch this movie.
Not really our mug of coffee |
If you're going to watch Capone you got to watch Capone with the mindset of I want to see this decline of this person's mental state this former Mobsters mental state. I wanna see the things that haunt him now actually really like that the fact that this person as they've aged you can blame it on the dementia. Well, that's probably the reason but I like The fact that it showed that you do monstrous things early on in your life and when you get older do those things haunt you I don't know if that's how it was but it made for some interesting Cinema for me. It did a good job at blurring the lines for the viewer of where the sanity ends and where the insanity is begins. movies would make that confusing. Sometimes it was confusing but I never got the feeling that that's not how I was supposed to feel I felt like I was experiencing the dementia as the movie was trying to make me experience.
